1. Article Writing
I prefer this than press release. It is so much easier to get accepted by an article directory than a press release. If you submit your article to enough directories, it can get equal exposure to press releases.

2. Commenting
Commenting can be a very effective way to get free traffic. I have certainly done it. If you know where to comment, you can massive and targeted traffic and high PR backlinks. The only problem though, it's quite time consuming to search for blogs and articles that are related to your website and allows you to comment on it. You can use softwares like Blog Comment Demon to automate your search for related sites. Though, you still need to read the article and comment cleverly.

3. Forum
Participating in related is also an awesome trick. People often forget to post a link to their website in their signatures. I personally don't like to use banners in forum signatures because it looks to cheesy. Use an interesting question instead. Look for forums and participate in it.

4. Classified Ads
There are tons of websites like craigslist.com that offers to post free classified ads on its website. I have never personally use them but some have reported an increase in traffic.

5. Organic Search Result
This is probably the hardest to get. You need to be at least in page 2 of search results for a particular keyword before you can expect any traffic. However, with the introduction of sites like *SQUIDOO*, I have personally got to number 2 position in a week for my main keyword. These are quality traffic that often converts highly if you targeted the right keyword.

6. Bookmarking
An increasing number of people are using online bookmarking services and browsing them. These are quality traffic Sites like digg.com and del.icio.us are good places to start. However it's very time consuming to post your bookmark to the hundreds of bookmarking sites. Of course, you can just post to the major ones, which still consists of at least 20. You can use softwares like bookmarking demon to automate the process, just don't spam the system.

7. Viral Marketing
Viral marketing is a technique of generating traffic by giving away free e-book and encouraging people who read them to do the same. It can be very effective if you already have a large list. If you are just starting out, it can take quite a while before your traffic picks up. However, these people who does visit your website convert well because they have been pre-sold by the book.

8. Buzz Program
These are programs you must install on your computer for your ad to be displayed. This program will display relevant ads on your computer while you are browsing. As you surf and see more ads, you earn more points. These points will then determine how often your ad will appear in the program installed in other people's computer.

9. Press Release
This is really difficult... at least for me. I'm not so much of a writer. But if you are, then this might just be for you. You must first be able to write an article of approximately 800 - 1000 words on a particular subject. You'll have to format it and have it edited. They'll then judge whether you article is newsworthy or not.
