Website objectives are inherently important for any website. Without any objective, you won't know how to move the needle and get closer to your business objectives.

Objectives are specific and measurable, while the goal has a broader context. An example of an objective is "Get 1,000 website hits/ day". An example of a goal is "Be the best Website in the Industry."

To be honest, it doesn't really matter whether you call it goal or objective. It means about the same thing, semantics.

When we revamp websites for customers, before we do any design work, must be established what success looks like. Not knowing where to go can be a costly mistake that is difficult to manoeuvre.

Website objectives are relative to the organisation. It shouldn't be compared with other competitors. It should be straight about your business. For this insight, we split into two, SME and Big Corporation.

For SME, website objectives should be simple because you don't have the resources to monitor all aspects of the website. So keep it simple. Generally, I'm inclined to pick conversion.

1. Grow Traffic

Whether you do it organically through SEO, through paid media, get PR from News Media, it doesn't matter. Being small means you are almost invisible. You need to let your target market know you exist.

2. Conversion

Conversion is when your visitor changes state, from being an onlooker, window shopper to giving their contact details or make a purchase. They continue to become your leads or customer. Example: 5 leads/ day.

3. Ranking on Keywords

The last one is to identify where you are on Google. You must do SEO for your website because they give free traffic to your website. Without SEO, you're more likely to be stuck on page 3 or 4, which is a bad place to be.

Large corporate: More than 50 staff. Being a large company you would need the website to integrate with every touchpoint of your department. Primarily, Sales Department, Human Resource, Customer Service and IT.

All of the above objectives still matter. Now we continue with the next 4.

For the sales department, commercial pages on the website are what they truly care about. The content on the page must be persuasive and convincing. This will reduce the sales-y work like more meeting, back and for emailing, endless calls.

Remove Unnecessary Codes CSS & JS

WordPress loads so many unnecessary codes (which are not used) on the website. For WordPress, you can use https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-asset-clean-up/… It takes a slight technical skill to identify which codes are in use.

Use Cache

Cache processes the codes and stores them as temporary memory. Like how you memorize 2x5. It's at the top of your brain. There are many caches solution, all works fine. The difference is UI and knowing what to use. I like WP Rocket

Load lesser files

If you're using Themes like Salient, Ocean, BeTheme, etc, they normally include all the features that you don't need. They can be disabled/enabled in their control panel. Figure out what you need, disable the ones you don't use.

Reuse codes as often

If you're using Elementor, all the pages will have a unique CSS file. Which is something we don't want. We want to load the CSS once. And use it as often as possible. When you design, make sure to reuse the same component as much as possible.

You can use GTMetrix or Pingdom, but it's too slow to show results. And the servers are far. Use the built-in Lighthouse in Chrome Developer Tools. Optimizing a website can take a full day.

A report by JP Morgan and MIERS (at the point of writing), the number of cases will increase to 6,300 by mid of April. Which means an extension is on its way. It may not end on 14th April.

What People Are Doing During MCO?

The first two weeks (22 March to 1 April), people are chilling. Binge-watching Netflix, Youtube while keeping updated on the Covid-19 outbreak.

Take-a-ways became the new norm (because the Government) enforced it. However, it’s nowhere near their typical sales.

But most new projects I know are at a halt. Because businesses are expected to pay full salary despite working from home (we both know that’s not really effective). Therefore, they are not too optimistic about new shiny objects.

You are left with very few options.

  1. Do marketing, get more customers or die trying.
  2. Don’t do anything, wait for Covid-19 to be over and hope for the best.

Which leaves us with option 1, do marketing. Here’s my take on Marketing during Covid-19.

The goal is not to close the deal, but to create as much touch point as possible. So that when the dust settles, and they are ready to buy, you’ll be on the top of the list.

7 Ways to Do Marketing During Covid-19

1. Content Marketing - SEO

While you are working at home, create evergreen content around your products and services.

Architectural services, write “how to choose an architect for the right structure”.

Construction Engineering services, write “The process of before, during and after hotel constructions”

The key is to educate your potential customers. Write or make content that would greatly benefit them.

I would start with a content pillar. Chances are you are not selling a single product (even if you do, it can still work). Also known as a "hub and spoke" model.

Choose a few pillars (they are your product or services), then the clusters or sub-category surrounding or relevant to it. I prefer to use a mind-mapping method as this gives a bigger view of what I am about to write.

Finally, fill in the suitable titles for every cluster (sub-category).

Start writing. Publish it and edit as you see fit. It’s difficult to start, but once you build momentum, you will be unstoppable.

2. Fix Your Marketing Funnel

If you haven’t got a clue what Marketing Funnel is, then this is the perfect time to learn. I've written in great length about the Marketing funnel, from Stranger to Advocate.

Note: Marketing Funnel, Sales Funnel, Flywheel, Inbound Marketing may differ in shape but they all share the same concept, qualify strangers to advocates.

The key to fixing your funnel is understanding what is broken or faulty or leakages.

You would need to see statistics (numbers) here. Here’s what I did, build a dashboard using Google Data Studio.

The next step is to find the conversion between each stage and drill deeper to understand what you are currently doing and how you can improve it.

If you don’t have the numbers, then you need to find a reliable CRM, I went with Hubspot. They offer free for the first 2,000 customers or contact CRM.

I would start with building and fixing the landing page or sales page because this is where the money is. Next, write blog posts to support the sales page. Finally, I do social media posting.

3. Do Paid Marketing

Remember, the goal is to create awareness and deepen relationships.

Now that you’ve created content, it’s time to get traffic. You can wait for Google SEO to kick in, but that would be too slow. The next best option you have is to pay for it.

There are a few ways to buy traffic. Facebook Ads and Google Ads.

I’m not going into the technique of creating an ad, you can watch it on Youtube on how to set up the ads and everything.

Now, get them to see you first and start collecting 2 things: Marketing Cookies and Email.

Marketing cookies are used to target advertising to a user (behavioural targeting). They are often served by third-party companies and track a user across websites.

In simple terms, Facebook Pixel and Google Remarketing. You can search how to set this up or get your technical people to do it for you.

In order for you to get your visitor email address, you are going to need more than a compelling blog post, you need a lead magnet.

I will explain that later in this post.

4. Re-engage with Your Audience

In the book "Bulls-Eye" by Brian Tracy, there’s a lot to learn, but the key takeaway here is,

Quantity of People x Quality of Relationship. That is the number of people or network and improve your relationship with them.

I’m sure you have a long list of customers stored in Excel sheets or any database format. It’s time to use it.

It would be utterly weird to send out an email if you’ve never sent one since their purchase or last project. That’s ok, that’s infinitely better than not doing anything.

What do I write or say? Good question.

Let’s go back to our goal: to deepen relationships.


Instead, ask about them. How is life? How is work from home like? Share tips (it doesn’t have to do anything with your product). Share funny videos, images etc.

Remember the first date with your spouse? Did you immediately ask to be boyfriend/girlfriend? No. You asked “what’s the time” and that was lame.

But that’s how a fire starts, with a spark. It gets bigger when you fan it.

Use first-person pronouns. That way you connect at personal (people-people) level, rather than brand-people. It sounds more authentic.

You can do this through mass-email, Direct Message (Whatsapp/ Telegram) or through calls. Take a pick. No right or wrong, only wrong timing.

If you haven’t got a list, then it’s time to build it. Start collecting from Whatsapp, Phonebooks, Emails. Create an Excel file or use Google Sheet.

5. Plan Your Social Media Post for the Year.

Your buyer attention will be scarce during MCO, they will be fixated on either the News or Entertainment and sometimes looking after the kids (I've got two and I'm pulling my hair).

It’s the perfect time to plan your social media posts because they are busy consuming other media.

I like to plan for 3 months in advance and do social media postings automatically.

Here’s how I do it.

Go to an old blog post (or a new one), take a few points of the blog post and use it for social media posting. It could just be a quote from the post, or statement or graph.

Schedule it on Postfity and call it a day. (You can use other services like Buffer, Hootsuite etc). You would need to link all up to 5 accounts, Linkedin Page, Twitter, Facebook Page.

Doing it one by one would be difficult, instead plan it on Google Sheets. This way you get to see the process as a whole and do it by batch just like making a dozen cupcakes (instead of baking one at a time).

For the images, you can use online tools like Canva. I personally prefer to do it on Adobe XD. I get to see the bigger picture. (I’m a big picture guy)

The goal is not to sell. It’s just to tell people that your business is alive.

6. Create a Lead Magnet.

How to steal people’s email? You bribe them.

I bribe my visitors with high-quality content through the ebook. There’s an elaborate process to produce an ebook, but you don’t have to do it my way (I’m a perfectionist).

Instead, offer Check Lists. They are the easiest to make without any special tool. All it takes is Microsoft Words and save it as PDF.

You can get inspiration easily from Pinterest or search for a business that is similar to yours. Download it and improve on it.

7. Surveys and Planning Your Next Move

The last recommendation for marketing during Covid-19 is to do surveys.

These are not general surveys, the ones that you tick in forms. But the ones that you call and get them to talk about your service (at the very least write).

Normally, once we’re done with a project, we’d interview the customer. How was our service? Does it meet their expectations and how can we be better?

The feedback was brutal, but that’s what we’re exactly looking for, honesty. If they can be honest with us, it means they trust us.

As a result, we built a ‘customer dashboard’ to show exactly where we are in the project, timelines, pending payments etc. Now customers would know exactly what has been done, and what’s coming up without breathing down our necks.

The short answer is, it depends.

As a web designer, I have the urge to tell you yes. But that goes against my personal rule, which is, to be honest (even if it hurts).

With the outbreak of Coronavirus Covid-19, it has become apparent, that businesses have to be online. Otherwise, you are on the losing end. Business needs a safety net. It needs to operate automatically without much interference from owners.

I can get sales from Social Media. Why website?

Great. But here's the reality.

Doing sales on Social Media is like passing brochures at a party. Only 3% will keep, the rest goes to the bin.

Whether you like it or not. No one likes to be sold on the social media platform. The only reason people go to these platforms is to connect with friends and be entertained.

When you have a website, it's like taking people to a private room to check out your product and services.

Right of the bat, almost all business needs a website. It's not a question do you need or not, it's a matter of when. If you are not them, then this post won't really help you.

For now, let’s explore the question of a website for new business a little deeper.

1. How many customers do you have?

Let's say it's less than 5 customers per year (big government contracts), you can get away without any website. Because it's super targeted, and most of the interaction is in person.

If you have more than 100 customers, then you can't clone yourself to entertain everyone. You need a solid medium to replicate your message.

But if you haven't got any customers, then your focus shouldn't be on the website. It should be about building the business.

2. How do you get a new customer?

Meet in Person or phone calls? Do you go door to door to find new customers and always physical interaction. Common for insurance or direct sales. Or wait for referrals to come your way.

Promotion or paid advertisement. Do you print brochures or catalogs and send them to people? Do you run Facebook ads to attract new clients? If yes, you need a website.

By having a website, you can send them to one direction for anything related to the products or services you are selling. You can also retarget them and win mindshare.

Basically, it would be really difficult (given our services) to sell without them knowing us through our website (first touchpoint). Most sales happen offline, through phone calls or meeting.

3. Have you made any sales?

When you start a business or have an idea about a business, sometimes, you might think about owning a professionally made website would be a great idea.

That’s a faulty idea.

When I started out, I didn’t have a website. I have the domain, but never a complete website. It was always on ‘Coming Soon’. I was busy chasing sales than making a website for myself. I had the sign for years and I’m a web designer!

People don’t find me through my website, I have my portfolios everywhere and get referrals. That's how I get customers. As I grew bigger, I delegate jobs and made the website.

You need to test the idea first. Get your first 10 customers. Then think about scaling up. Sales come first. Use as much as free tools you at your disposal. Like Linkedin Facebook etc. Get the customers going.

Or you can do what I do. Buy a domain and put a ‘Coming Soon’ sign.

When you’ve got a sizeable sales volume and have made enough to afford one, build a professional website. Hire the best web designer. It’s the best investment you will ever make.

4. Is there a validated demand?

Ever heard of the website Kickstarter? Well, that’s where innovative and creative people test the market. They create a product and test the idea. If there are enough backings & support, build a professional website.

Commodatize industries, like milk, rice, restaurant, the demand is validated. People desire good food, good cloth, good image & reputation and whatnot. If you’re servicing this demand, then build a unique website. Focus on positioning your business.

While the demand for hand sanitizers, face mask and PPE is increasing due to Covid-19, do you think it will always go up? What happens when the cure is found?

You can analyze the demand by going to Google Trend.

5. How much is your product worth?

If you sell lemonade on the sidewalk with an average price of $1 per cup, and intend to stay that way, you don't need it. You do need a website if you intend to build a business through franchising your lemonade stand.

In B2B, if you're selling a Consultation service (which costs a lot of money), you definitely need one. You can't rely on Linkedin or Facebook to help sell for you. You need to show what you are worth and how have you helped others build the business.

6. Do you want to grow your business?

It would difficult to grow business if you are doing lobbying or middle man that serves anything your client wants. There’s no need for a website.

Some hardware stores owner I’ve met don’t want to grow their business. They don't intend to grow, which is alarming but that's their choice.

Growing a business means you need to reach more people. Besides social media, what better ways can you scale what you want to say to reach a bigger audience? TV Ads? Billboards? All this curiosity has to end somewhere. Where else if not a website?

7. Do you have a niche?

Do you sell anything and everything under the sun? If you do, you don't need a website. It will only hold you back if you have to update every single inventory you have. You can use ready malls like Lazada, Shoppee where people already have their wallets out, ready to pay for the next best thing.

The narrower the focus (niche) your business is, the more likely you will need a website. Being niche is good and people are constantly looking for niche business because they are experts at what they do.

For example, a katana maker (Japanese sword), only a handful of blacksmith makes it anymore (the sharp ones). Having a website can sharply increase the chance of getting found. I would recommend you use Google My Business too.

Conclusion  - Do I Need a Website for New Business?

It depends. Follow through the question again. If any of your answers fall on left, then you are better off with not having a website. Wait until your business is ready and you get enough income coming in. That's when you know you need a website, to scale your business.

  3. Yandex

You can skip, Bing and Yandex if you don’t really need to rank internationally (specific for Malaysia).

Once you have created your account as step 1, you may submit your sitemap.xml.

Every Search Engine Console has a different interface and navigation menu.

3. Submit on Industry Website

The search engine algorithm assigns any website by niche. This means if your website is about architecture, the expected content should be about buildings, structures anything related to architecture.

The best way to tell search engines about your niche is getting links from Industry associated websites like an association page.

Every industry has its own association page, you may need to figure out how to get listed. Prepare the following.

The goal is not about winning the award (though it would be great if you did), it’s to get your link on the website.

5. Links from Social Media

The easiest way to get links to your website is through your social media.

Facebook - Share through your Facebook page.

Instagram - Share through your Instagram profile.

Linkedin - Linkedin Page profile.

And any other social media you have.

Here’s my workflow on social media sharing:

I write a piece of content like this one (aim to be 500~1000 words), breakdown in smaller bits, and share on my personal profiles, Facebook, Linkedin, Instagram, and official website pages.

1 blog post with 7 points, will have a single post for itself on all platform. Refer to the diagram.

Get more shares by asking your employees to share it too.

The goal is not about getting traffic, but sending signals to Search Engine that your website exists.

6. Get Backlinks from Bloggers

Do a quick search of “Top __X__ in __Y__”.

X = your business, product, service E.g. web designer
Y = your targeted location

Once the result is populated, try to connect with the bloggers. It can be as simple as this.

“Hi Blogger-name,

I read your post here (the url of the website) and I’m wondering, what should I do to get my business listed as well.

Many thanks.”

You’ll be surprised, sometimes they are will to give for free.

You can also search for the bloggers that have mentioned you before by typing your brand name. Here's an example.

7. Add Videos to Your Blog Post

Go to Youtube and find a relevant topic to your blog post. Add to your site. These videos may not be the same brand as yours.

The goal is to make people stay on the website longer than expected.

The longer the visitor stays on the website, the more search engine thinks your website is very relevant.

But I wouldn't recommend this so often because it will hurt your authority. Unless you put a video of Oprah, Obama, to show your affiliation.

Long Term SEO Tactics 2020

I need to set another expectation here, long term SEO takes a lot of effort. Here are some numbers for you to know the magnitude of this.

1 Blog post (1000 words above) - Takes about 6-12 hours to complete.
1 Instagram carousel - 3 hours for the design to complete.
1 Facebook post (to share the blogpost) - 15-30 minutes for the headlines only.
1 Report with graphics - About 1 week (if I know the topic well enough)

Yes, a huge chunk of my time is spent on content creation. But hey, that’s why we pay marketing people, to create content for us.

Here are some things you can do.

8. Write Evergreen Blogposts

Writing an evergreen blog post is taxing, but not difficult. Start with what you know. Here’s some basic blog writing ideas.

  1. Educate your prospects about your products and services.
  2. Write 5W1H surrounding your products and services.
  3. Write FAQs that you get from prospects
  4. Share your project journey
  5. Understand where your ideal customer’s current situation, and where they are heading. Write insightful tips to help them grow.

The goal is to get people to stay on the website a little longer. The longer they are on the website, the more Search Engine thinks your website is legit.

9. Share Downloadable PDFs

Downloadable PDF is a must for B2B (corporate) Marketing because if you are not educating your audience, your competitors will.

Downloadable PDFs can be in many forms,

  1. Brochure, Tech spec sheet - Most common
  2. Industry Report
  3. Whitepaper
  4. Guides, Checklist

4 Reasons why you should produce your own PDFs,

  1. To educate the audience - most of the time the audience is looking for solutions to their problem, you also
  2. Build credibility - Be the first person/brand to educate your customers about their problems. They will only seek from you as they grow.
  3. Generate Leads - People are curious in nature. They don’t know what they don’t know.
  4. Show thought leadership - Because you are willing to give value for free and your competitors are not doing it.

10. Be a Guest Blogger on Relevant Website

Contrary to belief, you don’t need to be a book writer, a Guru, a million followers to be a guest blogger, as long as you have experience in your field. However, there are some fundamentals you need before you can do this, they need to know you can write.

Write lots of blog posts on your website.

Find the blog or website you want to be featured in, pitch your topic. You may not get an immediate yes, (it took me on average 4 attempts).

The blog owner cares about readership. Write content that is valuable to the readers. Don’t write self-promoting.

11. Pitch to Mainstream Media

While most of us think getting featured on mainstream media (major TV, Radio etc) it’s actually quite the opposite.

Mainstream media is always on the lookout for something ‘fresh’.

Here’s what you can do.

Go to the media website, find an article related to your business. Write a response email to the journalist about your point of view. How you see it as a ‘technical expert’. Add depth to the article, don’t contradict the story.

A journalist would rarely change their point of view unless they really don’t know what they are doing. Be helpful, start a relationship, you might be featured next.

12. Use Structured Data

The website crawler has gotten more advance in the past few years.

If you have a basic idea of how HTML works, then structured data is easy to learn. There’s also a plugin for this.

When you’ve built a library of content, you might want to expand the idea through different types of media.

Here’s what you can do.

Go to Google Analytics, check the best performing blog post. You can do so by going to Behavior > Site Content > All Pages

Turn those lengthy texts into videos, infographic, slides.

Make it easier for people to digest.

14. Hire SEO Companies

The last on the list is, of course, hire people to do it for you. Do it AFTER you have seen your website on Search Engine.

This is how it normally unfolds.

  1. Strategy - Understand what keywords you want to rank for, competition analysis, the voice, the content structure, measurement of success.
  2. Draft Topic - Topics are not titles. Topics are subject. Each topic may have 3 or more Titles to a topic.

Managing Your SEO Expectation

  1. No SEO company can promise no. 1 spot for your desired keyword, they don’t own Search Engines. Even engineers at Search Engine companies can’t give you the no. 1 spot. You have to earn it.
  2. It may not boost your ranking at all, but you do it because you have no time and expertise to do it yourself.
  3. Higher search engine ranks do not mean higher sales or generate more leads. This depends highly on your sales, products, reputation and other factors.

15. Hire SEO Experts or Writers as Your Staff

The last SEO tactics 2020, is to hire SEO staff. How much does it cost?

Roughly RM 4 - 10k per month. I wouldn’t recommend keeping an in-house SEO expert unless you have a massive product line with multiple subsidiaries.

Because once you get ranked, the SEO staff has nothing else to do.

What I would recommend is hiring writers. Create more meaningful in-depth content about your industry and share your industry knowledge.

26- 40 percent is excellent. 41-55 percent is average. 56 - 70 percent is poor. Anything above 70 percent is downright disappointing outside of blogs, articles, news, and events.

If your product page has more than 70 percent, it means your visitors do not know where to go but exit. Here’s what you can do.

2. Time on Page

Most common pitfall Google Analytics for beginners is to overlook the time spent on a single page. There is average (for entire website) and time on single page. Time on Page is important for SEO. If your content is high quality and helpful, people will stay a little longer and Google definitely wants to serve you content to your audience.

Metric: Higher Time on Page is Better.

For Articles, blog post, events, news:

Check the number of words, divide by 200 (200 is the average adult reading speed), you get the number of minutes they should spend on your website.

For Products:

If the time is too short (like 5 seconds), here's what you can do

If the time is between 30 seconds to 1 minute (provided you’ve done above),

3. Site speed

Every visitor has different connectivity speed to your website, depending on the device (mobile, desktop, tablets, etc).

Site Speed is also important for SEO because search engine prefers to send traffic to fast websites.

Metric: The lower the better. You want to get below 5 seconds mark.

4. New vs Returning Visitor

New visitors are people who just learned about you. Returning are (maybe) your leads or customer, visitors who know you. Learn more about the different between Visitors and Customers in Funnel Marketing.

Metric: Depends your marketing strategy and goals

If you ...

1. Do pay for Traffic (via Google Ads, Facebook ads, Influencers, Bloggers), expect your website to have more New visitors.

2. Do Content Marketing, expect the ratio to be 50:50.

3. Do send out newsletters, expect your returning customers to be more than new ones.

4. Do retargeting campaigns, expect more returning customers.

When I write a blog post, it's normally for my customers. I send out newsletters every now and then to share our new blog post. I’d expect more returning visitors than new ones.

This is the metric I cared most, because it shows how people found me.

Metric: Depends on Marketing Strategy and Goals

Let’s say I invest in making content on Facebook, I expect the traffic from Facebook to be more than anything else.

Likewise, if I invest in Content Marketing (blogpost), I’d expect more from Organic searches.

If I have a billboard, I’d expect more from Direct.

If I pay people to write about me, I’d expect more from referrals.

You want to be extremely good at one source, average for the rest. Buying traffic is the easiest way to get noticed. SEO will take a while and can be daunting for beginners.

6. Number of Visitors

Check the week-to-week (or month-to-month) growth.

You can do this by going to Audience > Overview. Then on the top right, click on the dates. Check compared to the previous period.

Metric: Anything positive, you want growth.

In my example, we’re experiencing a decrease in visitors. That’s ok because our post went viral, so I do expect it to go down once the content is dated.

To keep growing your traffic you can do 2 things.

7. Pages per Session

How many pages were visited in a single session? This metric determines the pages that visitors go through during their visits.

Metric: High page per session the better.

This correlates to the number of products and types of websites.

Blog content: 2-3 pages per session. Visitors find what they need helping with, solve the problem and closes the website

eCommerce (online shopping): More than 4 pages per session. You want them to check products after products. Once they are ready to buy, they go to the checkout page to make payment.

Corporate Website: 4-5 pages per session. You want visitors to learn about your product and services. And sometimes learn about your company, vision, top management, etc.

8. Popular Pages

Know exactly which page is popular because this page might be your best selling product or blog post.

If it's a blog post

Here's my basic workflow to producing content (blog post), steps are in order.

  1. Identify the problem of your customer
  2. Verify with one or two customers
  3. Post something short on Facebook.
  4. If it picks up, has shares and likes, I start writing 500-600 words.
  5. Post on the blog, share it on social media.
  6. If the post generates traffic, I add other types of media and content. Keep improving the content.
  7. If it continues to grow, I pay for the traffic to reach more people.
  8. Break the content into small pieces and share on Social Media.

Whether you are running a small business or large organization, the funnel plays an important role in your business.

It goes by multiple names, Customer Journey, Marketing Funnel, Sales Funnel, Marketing Hour Glass, Sales Pipeline.

Different gurus give a different name. To me, as long as there is a process, from start to finish and beyond, it's called the funnel.

Why Funnel?

B2B 'sales' is a complex process. It involves multiple interactions for different types of buyer readiness to make the purchase. Therefore, this process has to be broken down into phases, so that we can address objections and craft the right message at every single stage and for every multi-buyer.

What Does Funnel solve?

The funnel solves marketing divide. It segments the process so that we can use different tools for different purposes.

Is Every Funnel the Same?

The concept is about the same any business, can be applied to almost all business. However, the tools and message may differ from one business to another.

What's the Difference between B2B and B2C Funnel?

The concept is identical however, the usage is slightly different.

For B2C, the funnel should address a single buyer with multiple products. You don't need more than 1 funnel.

For B2B, the funnel should address multi buyers with multiple products. This is because the world view and concerns of B2B varies depending on role in the company. CEO has a different perspective than a procurement manager.

Who Needs to Learn the Funnel?

If you're starting out marketing, the funnel is fundamental of marketing. Not knowing would hinder your progress. You'll spend too much time tweaking ads, SEO but never get the intended result.

This the most basic funnel you can build. Today, the funnel has evolved to meet the demands of a sophisticated buyer.

Keep track of the Conversions, Traffic (new and returning users), bounce rate, page views, time of Websites and Search Engine Ranks. Common Mistakes in the Marketing Funnel

1. Selling to Early

According to Hubspot, only 3% of buyers are ready to make the purchase and you have to compete with others for this market share. Which is why we see price war (where companies lower price to win sales).

Purchasing is a question of when, not how to sell.

For example, my wife and I are expecting a third daughter in 4 months time. We may need newborn-size diapers, but we don't stock up now until we reach 1-2 weeks before delivery. For now, we might want to do research on the latest rash-free diapers. It's a matter of when, not now.

This applies to any business. Amateurs (new business) tends to enter the market at a lower price only to get thin margins or probably at loss.

2. Not Nurturing Leads and Prospects.

Nurturing can be done in many ways. Whether through the newsletter, follow-up calls, retargeting ads. We sort of understand the technicalities of these, but what about the content? What do we talk about?

Like you, I too struggle with content creation and follow up.

It's a shame because we need to know for certain, is this a valid opportunity or is it dead rather than letting it fade away. If I let opportunities fade away, I wouldn't know where to fix in the funnel. So do that follow up call.

As for content creation, you might want to search for Content Marketing Strategy. It will give you an idea of how to plan for your content and keep it as your arsenal. Use it at the right time and for the right problems.

3. Stop Communicating After Purchase.

In most cases, we stop after we won the sale and delivered a good job. This is ok if we're selling lower-tier goods like milk and bread, but we're not. We are professional marketers, we don't stop there.

Here's an example from Petronas. When I've made the purchase, they will cross-sell me a loyalty card. They now have my email and phone number. Whenever they have a promotion, they can blast directly to my email (cheapest way to connect customers).

Find ways to delight your customers. Turn them into clients and advocates.

4. No Value Ladder.

Your product and services should start with an Entry Level to Mainstream to High-End (Flagship) Level.

Entry Level - products that are no brainers. It's so cheap, you don't really have to think hard to make the purchase. Usually sold at lost or break even.

Mainstream - products, and services that are available and probably known to all. It does take a bit of thinking and decision making to purchase.

High-End Level - flagship products. These are products that are top of the line. Limited edition, highest technical specification. Requires a lot of thinking for someone who's looking to upgrade, but instant purchase for someone who demands performance, durability, and experience.

Here's a value ladder of a fast food joint.

Ice creams are no brainers entry-level product because it only costs some pocket change. Meal combo is mainstream, which cost about the same price of having a meal outside. And birthday parties are highest-level for fast food joints which can go up to thousands.

Look at your organization, and do a quick assessment of whether you have a value ladder. What is your Entry Level, Mainstream and High-End products?

4. Not Measuring and Fixing the Funnel

Before you can fix the funnel, you need to have a set of measurement. Measure the following

a. Number of Leads, Prospect, Customer, Clients
b. Conversion of every stage
c. Average Order per Sale
d. Lifetime value
e. Cost of Marketing per Sale

In my business, the biggest bottleneck is the proposal. It seems every prospect wants one to show their boss. Out of 10 proposal, 3 shown interest, 1 win. That's very poor considering the amount of effort spent on every proposal (takes about 2-3 days for 1 proposal). In short, spent 30 days to win 1 project, that's bad.

Instead, we changed the qualification process. We do call interviews, ensure that we diagnose the problem and good fit before getting a verbal agreement. Now, our proposal winning rate is 3 wins out of 4. That's 65% improvements.

7 Critical Must-Have SEO For Website to Rank

I have a love and hate relationship with SEO for a website. Sometimes I do everything right, but don't get rank. Sometimes I did the bare minimum, it ranks. Whatever it is, to me, the basic is always these 7 core principles.

Why use SEO for Website?

The main reason why I urge and use SEO for a website it's because it's FREE. The downside is that it takes discipline and the right know-how. If you want quicker results, use Search Engine Marketing like Google Ads. Overall, I prefer SEO than posting Facebook Wall page, which fades off quickly (usually within a week).

1. SEO for website = Speed

If you don't know this yet, Google loves speed. Try to do any search on their website, it'll return the result in split second with a high degree of accuracy. That's why Google is preferred search engine in the entire world.

2 seconds is the threshold for ecommerce website acceptability. At Google, we aim for under a half second.” Maile Ohye, from Google

Your website needs to load within 2 seconds. Is that even possible? Let's dive deeper.

a. Location.

It would be a lot quicker if your server resides in the same country as your audience. Meaning, if you run in a business in Japan, your server should be in Japan, likewise for any other country. A bad example would be, the audience is in Singapore but the server in San Francisco.

b. Reputable Hosting.

Get a good reputable hosting. But how to find them? Well, here's a few reviews, hosting facts, cnet, bitcatcha (Malaysia). For us, we prefer to use Google Cloud, Amazon Web Service, Vultr, Digital Ocean and Runcloud (for server management).

c. Caching

Use a caching tool for your WordPress. w3C and Super Cache are good enough. But if you're dead serious about speed, consider getting the premium version. We recommend using Swift Performance for caching.

d. Content Delivery Network

CDN helps to deliver your content quicker, serving from the nearest resource to your audience. Free ones like CloudFlare is adequate. You may need to upgrade if your business relies heavily on the website, like running an online store.

e. HTTP2

This is a bit technical. HTTP2 differs from HTTP1.1 by a lot. For instance, HTTP2 allows your browser to download simultaneous files from the website instead of serving one file at a time. It's like eating at a restaurant, where your orders are received in one go.

f. Image Compression

Compress the images using tools like PhotoScape, Riot, and ImageOptim (for Mac only). Also check the dimension of the files, ensuring that you are not loading more than what the viewers can see.

2. Age of Domain

The older the domain, the higher it can rank. That's why some domain name can go as high as $50,000 per .com. Not only because it looks good (vanity), but also because of its age.

Typically when I handle an SEO project, I want to make sure the age of domain is at least 6 months old. I will downright reject anything below 6 months because it's almost impossible to rank quickly within the project duration.

If you don't have a domain yet, buy it as soon as you can. Not only it'll help with your SEO, but at least protects your brand name.

3. Content Marketing

In North America 2018, 91% of marketers use content marketing as their marketing strategy. Content marketing does one simple thing, get more traffic to the website.

Google indexes website based on its content. If your content is only your about and service page, it would make it difficult for Google to know your niche and will not serve your website to their audience.

In a book that I read, Show Your Work by Austin. He shared 10 ways to market your work (even if you're a shy person). Here's a few

a. Share what you're working on. Ongoing projects are enough for teasers.
b. Your Process. Reveal it enough so that you don't give away your secret sauce, but enough to create rapport.
c. Your Accomplishment. This doesn't mean you have to show your awards, but you can also show your previous works. What succeeded and what didn't.
d. Share your Recipe. This is a big no-no to a lot of business, but it's actually the other way around. Gordon Ramsay teaches how to cook, but yet, he's raking in millions of dollars into this restaurant business.

If all else fails, just curate a content. Find something that you love reading, what you're passionate about and share it on your website. (This is the least you could do).

Every article you write must be at least 500 words. The best for me is above 1,500 words. It works every time.

4. Mobile Friendly

52.4% of the world is using the mobile phone to browse websites. In some website that I manage reaches 97% of the total traffic. Google, in fact, encourages this. You can run your test here at Google Page Speed.

Here's how my personal website looks like. Ideally, you need to get to 100, but sometimes, that's just not possible, due to external files loaded onto the website.

Another thing to note, Google will not try it's best not to rank your website on mobile search if it's not mobile responsive.

Newer WordPress themes are built to be mobile ready. If it's not, consider hiring a web designer to help you with this.

5. HTTPS Secure Website

Because Google is freely available to everyone who wants to perform searches, Google must be the gatekeeper of threats. One of them is security. Google will not rank your website it's not secure.

An insecure website, such as having malicious contents, spam backlinks, virus and malware is downright rejected by Google. This usually happens because of the following

a. HaCKed website. The server is not protected. Web hosting at fault here.
b. Use of 'admin' as it's default admin username.
c. Using stolen Premium plugin
d. Uploading from a malware-infected computer.

HTTPS has nothing to do with malware-infected websites. HTTPS is more like a secure way of communication between the server and the visitor. Ensuring that their session will not be hijacked.

While HTTPS remains optional, it's a must (for me) to get a better ranking in Google.

6. Technical SEO a.k.a. On Page SEO

It's called on-page because we can control the outcome of the page. Every single web page must adhere to the SEO guideline. I myself have 23 SEO checks before I hit the publish button.

Running WordPress? Use this SEO plugins to help you with Title, meta tags, meta description etc.

a. All in One SEO - Great overall. Buy premium and get SEO for video. I've used this for a very long time and loved it.

b. Yoast SEO - Another great plugin. But I find it to be a bit 'heavy'. Heavy in the way that it loads on the editing page

c. The SEO Framework - If you're just lazy, this is for you. It will automatically generate Meta and other stuff.

d. SEOPRESS - I use the Premium plugin, does all the above with speed and ease. I use this for all my projects now.

7. Off Page SEO - Inbound Links

It's called off-page because it's beyond your control. Basically, you need to get your website listed on other similar websites.

You can do this by submitting to directory links, post boards, forums, blogs, social media, bookmarking service. But it wouldn't get you as far you desire.

To push the limit, consider the following

a. Give product for free to bloggers. Get them to review your product which helps to boost your SEO.
b. Answer questions in Quora that is relevant to your website
c. Exchange links with your competition. You got to be bold.
d. Google for Business. Setup your account. It's relatively easy and free.
e. Make Youtube video about your product, addressing the problem you solve. (it's hard but worthwhile)

Bonus Round - Google Search Console

Consider adding your website to Google Search Console. It's free too! The purpose of using it is to ensure that you force Google to find your website. I kinda hate the new layout. It's too simplified, but I don't dwell on it for too long. Export my numbers then use Excel to plan the keywords.
